 Case Study No. 1:

How the Empowered Family program helped Gina Kimmel trust herself more and gain confidence in her homeschooling experience

Gina Kimmel has been homeschooling her son for 5 years before joining the Empowered Family program. But she wanted more clarity and confidence in their home education experience. She wanted to feel more at ease with their “way of living and learning.”

Yolonda’s approach and calmness resonated with her and through the program, Gina found that having someone else’s perspective helped with clarity. The experience created the space for her to focus on taking care of herself as an important part of her daily routine.

As a result, she has been exploring what she needs to be able to live from a more intuitive space every day. She has created more space for self-care. Together, she and her son have created a plan for homeschooling that supports each other’s needs. Her son helps out around the house more and his mood and attitude have been more positively engaging and lively.

She and her son now spend quality time together cooking and baking, an activity that she cherishes, and which came to the fore as a result of working through the activities and plans of the program. Her son continues to cook and bake on his own, and she has a self-care routine that makes it easier to go through the days.

Yolonda enabled me to come to know myself better, to feel more at ease with our home ed experience, to react in ways that are more in alignment with how I wish to parent.

Gina’s Challenges

Gina has been homeschooling her son for 5 years before joining the Empowered Family program. But she wanted more clarity and confidence in their home education experience. She wanted to feel more at ease with their “way of living and learning.” One of the main challenges she was facing was crafting effective independent work for her son and quiet time for herself.

She wanted to work on not sacrificing her own needs and desires, and instead be comfortable in taking time for self-care. She also wanted help in clarifying their approach so that both of them would feel interested and connected while learning at home.

Gina’s Solutions

Gina found that having someone else’s perspective helped with clarity.

“It helps to have someone to communicate with, bounce ideas off, and get ideas. It was immensely helpful to have someone else’s perspective to help figure things out. It can help no matter where someone is in the decision or journey for homeschooling.”

She was able to determine that being in partnership with each other got more things done and suited how they worked together.

“There were several deepening exercises that I normally wouldn’t have taken the time to consider or really focus on, but they challenged me to look deeper, to really get clearer on what I wanted to feel and experience daily in our home ed experience. This experience also really created the space for me to focus on taking care of myself as an important part of the daily routine.”

Gina’s Results

Creating an atmosphere that exudes more trust, clarity, and partnership.

“I’ve learned that I can trust myself more, in creating the framework, in identifying needs versus wants.”

One simple shift in how she starts her day has been instrumental in how her days unfold. Using what she learned, she created a simple ritual that spoke to her needs and which supports her.

“I’ve been exploring what I need to be able to live from a more intuitive space in our everyday lives.”

She and her son now spend quality time together cooking and baking, an activity that she cherishes, and which came to the fore as a result of working through the activities and plans of the program. He continues to cook and bake on his own.

“His mood and attitude have been more positively engaging and lively over this time...it’s been so nice to notice the shift.”

 Case Study No. 2:

How the Empowered Family program helped Brittany Acciavatti become self-assured in homeschooling her 3 kids and avoid burnout

Brittany Acciavatti is a mom of 3 who wanted to discover her children’s learning style, have a plan for each child for the Fall, and methods to effectively balance homeschooling three kids at the same time. Even with a Yoga background, she was still finding it challenging to bring the two together for healing to her family and constantly being caught in a shame spiral.

She realized that she would often spend a lot of time planning but taking no real action.

The Empowered Family program gave her the gentle nudge she needed to take some action within her planning.

On completing the program, Brittany finds that she feels comfortable asking for and receiving support. She has brought her whole family into the homeschooling process and is “having just the best experiences.” She now feels confident in managing the homeschool process and her self-care to avoid burnout, and her family has become closer during this process.

My only regret is why didn’t I start the program earlier.

Brittany’s Challenges

Brittany is a mom of 3 (ages 7, 5, and 3). She wanted to discover her children’s learning style, have a plan for each child for the Fall, and methods to effectively balance (somewhat) homeschooling three kids at the same time. At the point of joining the Empowered Family  program, she had only invested in books for her kids’ education and so wanted better options to ensure she didn’t “screw up my kids’ world”.

Further, coming from a Yoga background, Brittany found it challenging to bring the two together for healing to her family and constantly being caught in a shame spiral.

Brittany’s Solutions

For Brittany, the program gave her a gentle nudge to take some action within her planning.

“I spend a lot of time in my head, planning, daydreaming, and I can get stuck there very easily. I've learned that I can make some really well-meaning plans, but that there’s sometimes a disconnect between planning and doing.”

“I kept wobbling between planning a school-at-home environment where we will check off all the boxes that our district requires to then wanting to throw a lot of it out the window and just flowing with it. When I start leaning more toward traditional methods, the flame in me doesn’t burn as bright.”

The goal of the program was to provide a strong support system and guidance and reduce the frustrations that can come with homeschooling. Brittany found that support to be a critical part of her homeschooling journey.

Yolonda’s “words ring through my ears when I start to worry about all the ways the choices I'm making now for my children will affect them in the future ... I remember that I’m doing my best with what I have, with what I know now, presently. It’s really helped anchor me when my mind wants to spin.”

Brittany’s Results

Brittany feels comfortable asking for and receiving support in delivering a homeschool experience tailored to her family’s needs. She has brought her whole family into the homeschooling process and is “having just the best experiences.”

“I don't have the guilt of enlisting Tom [her husband] in this work with me. We're honest about what we need, and we work together. Our bonds feel so strong.”

She has also noticed how her kids mirrored her energy. For example, she sees …

“so much more cohesiveness, collaboration, and corporation when they [her kids] don’t see me with my phone in my hands as the whining, the fighting that seems unrelated is actually connected to my phone, my inattention.”

Now, Brittany brings more awareness to each moment, and what affects her and the kids.

“It's not that I never feel tired or overwhelmed, but I feel self-assured in knowing how to sustain myself before complete shutdown and burnout.”

 Case Study No. 3:

How the Empowered Family program helped Kate Nelson eliminate mom guilt and mom competition and be confident in her son’s educational choices

Kate Nelson, a mom of a 9-year-old son, transitioned to working from home full-time. Her first attempt at homeschooling saw several challenges emerging, reactions for which she did not want a repeat heading into the new school year. As a coach herself, Kate realized that she also needed a coach to support her in not just checking the boxes to get ready to home school, but in getting ready emotionally, physically, spiritually, and mentally to do it.

Through the program, Kate found guidance to helpful resources, wisdom and comfort from a non-judgmental space, and practical and effective exercises and assignments.

As a result, she has:

·       Learned to understand her son and know him better to build activities that suit them both

·       Built a blueprint to navigate the school year

·       Become confident in why she’s homeschooling and how to express this to others in her support system

·       Gotten the support of her parents on her homeschooling activities

I feel so calm stepping into homeschooling my son because of all the preparation I’ve done over many weeks to get to where I am. And instead of following someone’s prescription for success, I was led (step-by-step) through a process that allowed me to build my own design for our family. One that fits us and that I know I can be successful in because I did the upfront thinking, noticing, planning.

Kate’s Challenges

Kate, who acknowledges that she’s a pre-planner, works from home full-time and is a mom of a 9-year-old son. With the new school year approaching, she wanted a better approach to tackle the challenges that had emerged in the previous term.

When Kate signed up for the Empowered Family program, she was trying to figure out how to ensure her Fall school period was not a repeat of Spring. She wanted a plan for the Fall, to develop a work schedule to support the plan, and the courage to speak confidently about her son’s educational choices and options.

“When I connected with Yolonda, I was looking for help figuring out how to have our upcoming Fall NOT look like our last Spring did. I had read a few articles about "unschooling" and was intrigued, based on my son's learning style, but didn't really know how to get the confidence to jump into it or to even know for sure it would work.”

Kate was no stranger to coaching and knew that she would need some help if she wanted this school term to be a success.

“As a coach myself, I knew I needed to hire a coach to support me in not just checking the boxes to get ready to home school but in getting me ready to do it (emotionally, physically, spiritually, and mentally).”

Kate’s Solutions

Kate admits that she wanted to rush ahead to the end to learn how to homeschool. But the “forced reflection” in the program helped her pause and lean into the experience.

She found that “those times spent getting to know him and what resonates with him, what emotions do want to engender in our life this Fall, and how I’m going to put in the structure” was an essential part of the process.

Through the program, Kate found guidance to helpful resources, wisdom and comfort from a non-judgmental space, and practical and effective exercises and assignments.

Kate’s Results

Quality time, learning, gains in confidence

“In the first month, I had calm, intention, and knew what I wanted out of it. We [my son and I] were working towards something together. The world is in upheaval, but this part of our life is in a better stage.”

“I have learned that my son does better being independent of me while I work if, when we do get moments together, I look him in the eyes when he talks and I am fully present (no phone distractions, no to-do list distractions running in my head, etc.) to him and whatever it is we’re doing together.”

The community fostered in the program also allowed her to make lasting connections with other moms experiencing similar challenges and exchange ideas to find solutions for their unique situations. She has also mapped the journey for her family.

“When it gets hard, I have resources that I can return to, and they are my notes that I made along the way.”

She has also learned how to understand emotional connections to everything around her and how that impacts her, her son, and their learning experience together.

“The biggest piece from the program that I still continue today and that totally shifted how I look at our days together is understanding our sights, sounds, smells, activities, etc., that bring us to different emotions.”

The program allowed Kate to explore what options were right for her.

“It could be that the end solution is to stay with a public school. I could look at the options as rational choices and comfortable in my decision. When I’m questioned, I can confidently know and state why without mom guilt and mom competition.”
